Thanks for your comment and weighing on the species identification. This is good to know. It does not burst my bubble in the least and the reason why I used the word “possibly” in the caption. No matter which ant species this is, the proliferation of ants around Jamaica will only deepen the impact on the island’s fauna — and the main point of my blog entry.

I hate to burst your bubble but the ant species pictured above is most certainly a Camponotus species and not a Solenopsis.

I am so proud of the Maroons and their history of bravery, resistance to enslavement, colonization and ultimately subjugation. They were born free in West Africa, primarily Ghana, where the dominant Ashanti lived as fierce people so why should they have allowed the Spaniard and British tyrants to steal their freedom. These people, most of whom are Ashanti who were originally Hebrew Israelites are of The Lost Tribes of Israel, undoubtedly, at least to me. They are noble in character, as is apparent from how they govern their community with order, justice and cleanliness. And, I’ve often heard the expression, cleanliness is next to godliness. Indeed !

Wonderful article to introduce many to the Maroon People and the remote area that is a paradise on the Island. Dowdie sounds like a very sharp young man who will undoubtly pass on many stories to all of those who encounter him on their journey through this area. Hope that this mountain paradise continues to be protected so that other scientists and nature lovers can record the untold beauty there.

Tell Christopher that the sink holes are real and the karst is holier than a piece of Swiss cheese. It’s what lives inside the holes that is the great attraction for me.
